High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2022 – Adoption of the Ministerial Declaration

High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2022
Adoption of the Ministerial Declaration

Statement by the Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN
Amb. Maurizio Massari

Thank you Mr. President.

Excellencies, dear colleagues,

I am honoured to deliver these remarks jointly with my fellow cofacilitator, my dear colleague Amb. Margo Dyeie, Permanent Representative of Nauru to the UN.

At the outset, we wish to express our gratitude to you, Mr. President of ECOSOC, Amb. Collen Vixel Kelapile, for having entrusted us with this high, important and challenging task of facilitating the negotiations for this year’s HLPF Ministerial Declaration.

The HLPF is our unique, inclusive and effective platform, the key forum for the review of the 2030 Agenda. Its Ministerial Declaration represents its central outcome, constituting the political commitment of the international community to accelerate action for the SDGs.

We leave at times of multiple and interconnected crises which are putting at great risk the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda. We, Member States of the HLPF, have been therefore called to step up efforts, strengthen National and International action guided by solidarity, multilateralism and leaving no one behind.

After 6 months of negotiations, today we have before us a comprehensive, ambitious, action-oriented Declaration, which set key political commitments and precise policy guidance for all, in order to deliver on our promises. We are reflecting the gravely concerning global scenario, touching upon key issues, and relaunching global, regional, national and sub-National action and calling all actors to redouble efforts in all dimensions of sustainable development, including by recalling the peacesustainable development indivisible link. We are reaffirming without reserves that the 2030 Agenda and all its connected UN framework, including the Paris Agreement, are our common blueprint to recover better from COVID-19 and to build a better future for all.

We wish to sincerely thank all delegations for all their tireless efforts and cooperation in all stages of negotiations. After a lot of work, it is with a sense of appreciation that we can now unite behind this Ministerial Declaration.

Dear colleagues,

After intense work together, we achieved an important objective. By considering this declaration today, we are proving that even at the most challenging times, we can come together and deliver in the interest of all. We are recalling that with diplomacy, cooperation and dialogue, we can bridge gaps and find common solutions. We are reaffirming the central role of multilateralism.

We hope that, by adopting this declaration, we will truly accelerate global action to achieve the 2030 Agenda and send a strong signal that multilateralism can and will deliver for all and leave no one behind.

Thank you.
